Larry's Corner: A Good Harvest This Fall

By Larry Schweiger, NWF President & CEO

One of the delights of summer in Pennsylvania is all the fresh produce we enjoy this time of year.  This bounty is a result of the labor of all those who patiently tilled the soil, planted the seeds, tended the plants, and finally brought in the harvest.

Many of you have been working faithfully this summer to safeguard wildlife by helping to ensure passage of energy and climate legislation that will set America on a path of action to reduce climate change pollution, create millions of new clean energy jobs, and enhance our country’s energy independence.

Your work is paying off.  A recent Zogby survey found that support for action on clean energy is strong.  A majority of likely voters favor the clean energy plan passed by the House of Representatives and want the Senate to act quickly to also enact a plan.  And in these challenging economic times, more than half of likely voters believe that a new American energy plan will create jobs.

We need decisive action now on climate change.  A recent report released by the U.S. Global Change Research Program found that every region of the country is already being affected by climate change and the impacts on our natural systems will only get worse the longer we wait.

I’m looking forward to talking with you on a special leader teleconference on Tuesday, September 22 at 6pm Eastern about our plan of action for this most important fight of our time.  Please hold the date.

And I hope to amplify your voices with the publication of my book Last Chance:  Preserving Life on Earth.  In the book I provide "To Dos" to help readers be part of the solution to the climate crisis and to protect our planet.  Affiliate Representatives and Executive Directors will receive a copy of the book in the coming weeks. The book is available for purchase on Amazon and other book retailers.  The book is also downloadable on Kindle.  I encourage you to share the book with others so that together we can get the message out to an even wider audience of what we need to do to ensure a healthy world.  All author proceeds will be donated to National Wildlife Federation.

As we gear up to pass an energy and climate plan in the Senate this fall, I know that all our hard work will pay off if we keep at it.  Thanks to your leadership and commitment, our children and grandchildren will reap a clean and healthy world.
