Connecting People to Nature and the 111th Congress
Friday, December 5, 2008(National Wildlife Federation) The Obama Administration and the new Congress will provide exciting education advocacy opportunities on connecting people to nature. For the first time ever, the Green Group, which consists of the major national conservation groups, has issued recommendations to the Presidential Transition Team on Environmental Education.
NWF played a key role in drafting these recommendations, including the creation of a Presidential Commission on the Great Outdoors, support for federal No Child Left Inside legislation, and reauthorization of the National Environmental Act. Our Surgeon General campaign now includes over 20,000 citizens and 183 national organizations to urge the Surgeon General to issue a formal "call to action" to educate Americans on the health benefits of outdoor play.
We will launch a advocacy toolkit in early 2008 to help the many state No Child Left Inside coalitions move a comprehensive policy agenda forward to support environmental education, green design, public lands, and public health.
