A leaked document obtained by the National Wildlife Federation recently revealed that the Department of Interior and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are planning to weaken the Endangered Species Act in the next few months. Just days after this news broke, a public comment period was opened to get input as to what Americans think about their dangerous proposal. NWF has drafted the attached comments opposing the rollbacks and asking for DOI and NOAA to withdraw the proposal.
If finalized, the proposed regulations would dramatically change the way the Endangered Species Act is implemented. The proposed regulations roll back critical Endangered Species Act protections at a time when global warming is putting increased pressure on endangered and threatened wildlife and plants. The proposed regulations should be withdrawn because they dramatically decrease the role of independent scientific review in determining how federal agency projects will impact endangered and threatened wildlife and plants.
This consultation process is a vital Endangered Species Act protection and the proposed changes would weaken--and in some cases eliminate--this oversight. It is critical that DOI and NOAA hear that the public opposes rollbacks to the Endangered Species Act. If you have any questions on the proposal, please contact Karla Raettig at raettigk@nwf.org or 202.797.6869. Additional information can be found here.
