 Larry Schweiger's Corner

The Chance of Our Lifetime
Thanks to all of you who attended National Wildlife Federation's Affiliate Executive Directore Retreat in Louisiana.  I am so inspired by your good conservation work.  Together we are making real progress.  A special thanks to Louisiana Wildlife Federation and National Wildlife Federation Board member Greg Smith for arranging the tour of Coastal Louisiana.  As we heard the powerful determination of the residents of Grand Bayou to flourish in spite of salt water intrusion, threat of sea level rise from global warming, and other significant challenges, I was struck by how similar their commitment is to that of the communities in my home of western Pennsylvania

The North Carolina Wildlife Federation worked diligently in 2008 to ensure a wildlife conservation property tax relief bill passed successfully.  Through its advocacy efforts, the North Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation to create a Wildlife Use Value Program that assists private landowners who manage their property to benefit wildlife.  For the land to qualify as "wildlife conservation land" for the reduced tax valuation, it must be a minimum of 20 contiguous acres, have been owned for the previous five years, and be managed under a written conservation agreement with the state wildlife agency to be sure wildlife and its habitat will be improved.  Refer to Session Law 2008-171 North Carolina H.B. 1889 for detailed legislative information or refer to page 10 in the Fall 2008 NCWF Journal for information.

The Minnesota Conservation Federation (MCF) worked diligently over the past 10 years to provide dedicated funding for wildlife and conservation.  Those efforts culminated in passage of the "Clean Water, Land, and Legacy" constitutional amendment on November 4.  The amendment guarantees general fund investments for the next 25 years for habitat, hunting, and fishing needs and priorities.  The amendment will also provide funds to clean up rivers, lakes, and streams, funds for state and regional parks, state and regional trails, and arts, history, and culture programs.  MCF thanks all the sportsmen's clubs and individuals who volunteered time and resources to work for passage of the constitutional amendment!  Read MCF Executive Director Gary Botzek's legislative update for more details.  The MCF will re-launch http://www.theamendment.org/ on January 1, a site for news and accountability on the amendment.  People will have an opportunity to post articles to this site.
